Des Moines starter Walt Beckwith put a stranglehold on the Toledo offense. The left-hander had complete command of his forkball in leading the Pharaohs to a 4-1 win. Beckwith went 7 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 9. His record improves to 1-0. The save was credited to Tom Caldwell, his 26th.

Des Moines grabbed control in the top of the sixth. With one out and runners on 1st and 3rd, Jim Eichelberger delivered a run-scoring single, to make it 2-1 in favor of the Pharaohs.

"Whenever we hold the other team to one run," said Pharaohs manager John Hann, "I like our chances."

The Pharaohs, at 56-44, lead by one game in their division.
