The rain made it unbearable at times; nonetheless, the faithful who endured the elements at Velveeta Field enjoyed themselves.
Behind a solid performance from shortstop Paul Strom, the Toledo Cheesepressers defeated the Havana Knights, 14-3. Strom went 3-3 with a double, 2 singles, and was hit by a pitch. He drove in 4 runs and scored once for the Cheesepressers. Wilber York, who went 6 innings, was the winning pitcher. He was charged with 3 runs on 5 hits, while walking 2 and striking out 10. His record now stands at 10-9.
The Cheesepressers beat the Knights in part due to timely hitting. Case in point: the two-out single Phil Hubbard produced in the bottom of the second. Batting against Havana pitcher Mike Fox, Hubbard gave his team a 5-3 lead when he hit a 2-run single.
"If we play like this, we can win a lot of games," Hubbard told the Toledo Gazette.
The Cheesepressers, at 73-42, have a comfortable 16½-game lead in their division.
